Haggai 2:2-3, 6-9
God can work in any situation to bring forth a positive outcome. The Israelites could not build a temple to match the original, but their focus needed to be on God's presence, not the outward appearance. Nor can we live a perfect life, yet God can forgive our weaknesses and use the strengths He gave us to change the world.
It had been 15 years since they had returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the wall under Nehemiah's leadership. They were suffering because they had not followed God's instruction to also rebuild the temple. Much like our current situation in the world today, they were too concerned with pleasing themselves and those around them instead of putting their faith where it belongs... in God who had seen them through so many other trials.
