Why Give?
God tells us to be responsible stewards with our finances, our families, our marriage, our work and our health. When God is first in any, or all of these areas, we see blessings from our obedience.
Just as you, the people of Eastwood Baptist, have been obedient in trusting God with your tithe, we strive to be good stewards of that money. Because of your generous giving of tithes and offerings, we are able to give hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to missions and ministry to our community. We do this in hopes that an unchurched person will hear about the love God has for them that they will surrender their lives to Him. When you give you are supporting a unified budget that is designed to carry out the day to day operations.
"Bring the whole tithe to the store house, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of Heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."
- Malachi 3:10
While Jesus does endorse tithing, the New Testament as a whole does not assert that there is only one manner or system for our giving. Although, Paul does give explicit New Testament instructions regarding giving. Paul says, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7. This is explicit and a far better way to live and give than in the old covenant system of giving. It is clear from scripture that everything we have through Christ Jesus in the New Covenant relationship is better. Literally, this is what the author of Hebrews was saying in Hebrews 8:6 “But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better since it is enacted on better promises." Additionally, Jesus is quoted in Acts 20:35 as saying “It is more blessed to give than receive.” Our giving should be better as well.
